The terms "accreditation" and "certification" are often used synonymously. However, this is not correct.

What is certification?

“Certification" generally confirms a "conformity". Certification is proof that a company, person, organisation, system, product or service conforms to a specific requirement. As a simple example, one could mention the ASU (Exhaust emission test) sticker for motor vehicles. It confirms that the vehicle complied with the required standard at the time of testing. This declaration of conformity is limited in time.

What is accreditation?

“Accreditation" goes beyond this and confirms "competence" in addition to "conformity" with a specific standard. Accreditation is a confirmation by a third body that a conformity assessment body, e.g. a laboratory, has the technical competence to carry out certain competence assessment tasks. Accredited laboratories thus have independently confirmed competence that they perform correct and valid testing and assessment of results. This competence lies with the staff who must therefore be demonstrably trained, work according to valid test procedures and be able to correctly evaluate the applied procedures also with regard to measurement uncertainties.
